The Singapore Cardiac Society was started in 1958 by a group of specialists with special interest in Cardiology working at Outram Road General Hospital. In 1969, the Singapore Cardiac Society officially came into being. There were rapid developments in the field of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in Singapore. Dr Aubrey Pitt introduced coronary angiography to Singapore from Melbourne in 1975 and Dr Tan Ngoh Chuan, assisted by Dr Floyd Loop from Cleveland Clinic, performed the first coronary artery bypass surgery. M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography were introduced in 1975 and 1980 respectively. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) was first carried out in 1986 and nuclear cardiology followed next in 1988.

The Singapore Cardiac Society’s aims are:

• To advance knowledge and practice of cardiovascular medicine in Singapore.
• To promote research and publications of medical and scientific works in cardiovascular medicine.
• To promote regional and international co-operation in cardiovascular medicine.

Singapore Cardiac Society is hosting the 1st Asia-Pacific Heart Rhythm Society Scientific Session (APHRS 2008) – In conjunction with 4th Asia-Pacific Atrial Fibrillation Symposium (APAFS 2008), which will be in Singapore in November this year. The annual APAFS was first held in Seoul, South Korea in 2005, Tokyo, Japan in 2006 and Taipei, Taiwan in 2007. The inaugural APHRS will be held in Singapore.
