We are pleased to announce the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention 2009
A key strategy for addressing cardiovascular heart disease and stroke is to educate the public and healthcare practitioners about the importance of prevention. When healthcare providers perform consistent risk factor assessments, more patients can be properly diagnosed and medically managed to prevent cardiovascular disease. Both primary and secondary prevention, as well as new developments in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease, need to be addressed.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this presentation, participants should be better able to
  • Apply strategies to increase patient compliance with exercise, stress reduction and smoking cessation recommendations to achieve better cardiovascular health.
  • Define the role of nutrition in the treatment and prevention of disease, explain the uses of nontraditional diets and apply strategies to improve patient understanding of and compliance with nutrition recommendations.

  • Review the evidence supporting the positive effects of fish or fish oil consumption on various cardiovascular outcomes, particularly cardiac death vs. nonfatal events, and apply appropriate strategies to assist in recommendation of fish or fish oil to patients.
  • Explain the components of an optimal diet that prevents atherosclerosis and lowers the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and initiate strategies to increase patient compliance with an appropriate diet.
  • List the major dietary sources of trans fat, and describe the effects of trans fat intake on major cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Explain the difference between the China Study and the China Project, discuss the traditional limitations of epidemiological, population-based human studies and recognize the compatibility of the China Project findings with other types of diet and disease evidence.
  • Describe the molecular pathways involved in atherosclerosis and review the basis for plaque instability.
  • Develop a preventive strategy in clinical practice and apply evidence-based guidelines to reduce cardiovascular disease.
  • Name evidence-based practice protocols in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
  • Review the results of the JUPITER trial, explain its impact on statins, LDL, CRP and vascular disease prevention and list likely practice guideline changes for vascular disease risk assessment and risk reduction.
  • Analyze evidence-based data supporting the efficacy of medical therapy for reducing the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and implement new strategies to improve patient outcome.
  • Describe the mechanisms of atherosclerosis and plaque rupture, discuss how they initiate acute coronary syndromes and sudden cardiac death and implement treatment strategies for improved patient care.
  • Utilize new strategies to prevent and arrest atherosclerosis.
  • Explain the complex and conflicting role of the immune system in the treatment of atherosclerosis, and utilize immunomodulation strategies for atherosclerosis management.
  • Review recent clinical trial data suggesting that improved intensive glycemic control may not reduce the risk of macrovascular disease, incorporate effective strategies for glycemic therapy and evaluate oral agents for monotherapy and combination therapy.
  • Initiate strategies using aspirin and other antiplatelet agents in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
  • Describe the key mechanisms of macrovascular disease in diabetes and apply strategies to reduce risk.
  • Utilize aggressive strategies to lower LDL and evaluate the impact on cardiovascular disease prevention.
  • Discuss how HDL and its components produce atheroprotective effects and initiate strategies to utilize the benefits of HDL for reduction of atherosclerosis.
  • Explore new data concerning the relationship between blood pressure and clinical outcomes, and determine whether changes in clinical practice guidelines for hypertension diagnosis and treatment are now warranted.
  • Review the recent evidence from hypertension clinical trials regarding the efficacy of different drug types in protecting against major clinical events, and determine whether newer drugs and newer drug combinations are now the therapies of choice in hypertension.
  • Explain definitions of the metabolic syndrome, describe the risk factors for heart disease and assess and critique current treatment options for the metabolic syndrome.
  • Implement new patient care strategies consistent with the current guidelines for cardiovascular disease in women.
  • List the pros and cons of measuring and treating inflammatory biomarkers for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, and implement new strategies for improved patient care.

The mission of Baptist Health South Florida's Continuing Medical Education (CME) Program is to improve patient care by enhancing physicians' clinical effectiveness through organized educational activities that focus on both existing and new diagnostic and treatment modalities.
